Meeting Details

Join the AIChE Pittsburgh Local Section on Tuesday, November 17th, for an insightful
dinner meeting featuring veteran EHS and emergency response leader Bill Burket.

With over 30 years of leadership across Shell, Bayer, and Plug Power alongside service on DHS and NFPA national boards, Bill will share his practical insights on:
  • Regulatory Expectations: Key compliance requirements spanning EPA, OSHA, DOT, PHMSA, and DHS.

  • Planning Pitfalls: Recurring gaps and common weaknesses in facility emergency plans.

  • Coordination Under Pressure: Aligning internal response teams with external emergency agencies.

  • Real-World Lessons: Case studies on how preparation and clear communication shape outcomes.

About the Speaker

Bill is a seasoned environmental and safety professional with a strong foundation in chemistry and engineering, recognized for his deep expertise in regulatory interpretation and implementation across DOT, PHMSA, DHS, FRA, USCG, and emergency response frameworks. His career spans over three decades of advancing safety performance and compliance across the oil, gas, and chemical sectors, with a particular focus on the Marcellus Shale region.

As EHS Director at Plug Power North America, Bill leads environmental, health, and safety programs supporting hydrogen and energy innovation. Previously, he served as Industrial Hygienist at Shell’s Monaca site, where he strengthened occupational health systems for large-scale petrochemical operations. Earlier, as EHS Compliance Coordinator at Range Resources, he authored and implemented the corporation’s EHS Management System, led emergency response initiatives, and chaired the Marcellus Shale Coalition Health and Safety Committee, developing several industry best practices that shaped regional standards.

Bill’s regulatory acumen was honed through leadership roles at EOG Resources, Bayer Technology Services, and Weavertown Environmental Group, where he managed compliance, emergency preparedness, and training programs integrating federal and state requirements. His contributions include service on the Department of Homeland Security Chemical Transportation Advisory Committee (two terms) and the NFPA Industrial Section Board of Directors.

A lifelong advocate for community safety, Bill remains active as a volunteer firefighter, bringing hands-on emergency response experience to his professional practice. His career reflects a rare blend of technical rigor, regulatory insight, and operational leadership — all grounded in a commitment to protecting people, property, and the environment across the Marcellus Shale and beyond.
